  • 2014 Barolo Via Nuova, E Pira & Figli, Chiara Boschis, DOCG

The 2014 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of six sites - Liste, Terlo, Ravera di Monforte, Mosconi, Gabutti and Baudana - all of which are bottled as vineyard designates by other growers. There is something about the art of the blend that can be convincing, especially in challenging vintages such as 2014. The Via Nuova is a veritable explosion of aromas, flavors and sensations. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, kirsch, cinnamon and lavender all rush from the glass. Sweet, perfumed and beautifully layered throughout, the 2014 Via Nuova is all finesse.

    Robert Parker

This is the mid-weight wine that exists on a continuum between the ethereal elegance of Cannubi and the muscular power of Mosconi. The 2014 Barolo Via Nuova represents a traditional assembly of fruit from various sites, including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d'Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d'Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). This beautiful wine offers volume and grit with beautiful mineral tones that stand proud above the dark fruit, cassis and wild rose. There is a note of mineral saltiness on the close that I really love. // Chiara Boschis and her brother Giorgio farm eight crus in Barolo today, but she started off with just two. Within the last year she acquired another hectare of Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. Another big milestone for the estate is certification for organic farming, something she has been working for tirelessly on a more inclusive level. In fact, Chiara Boschis dreams of a day when all Langhe wines are produced with organic farming. In terms of winemaking, this estate follows a very natural, or hands off, approach with pied de cuve (or ambient yeasts) fermentations in cement vats with automatic punch-downs that are extra soft and slow. Fermentations are started at 29 degrees Celsius and last anywhere from ten days to two weeks. These steps are employed to keep color brightness and fruity freshness, which is an estate priority. - Monica Larner.

Round and solidly built, offering plum, cherry, earth and graphite flavors. The lively acidity and well-groomed tannins lend finesse. Finishes with a mix of fruit, earth and mineral elements. Best from 2021 through 2042. 580 cases made, 200 cases imported. - BS
