  • 2018 Mad Hatter Shiraz, Hewitson, Barossa Valley

Wonderfully ripe and impeccably proportioned, the bouquet shows sweet aromas of dark berries together with seductive nuances of vanilla, dark cocoa, olive and violet. The palate is sumptuous and opulent, offering terrific fruit power and richness, gorgeously complemented by velvety mouthfeel and seamlessly woven tannins.

    Winefront

Smooth and creamy Shiraz, raspberry and black fruit, baking spices, perhaps some sage leaf. Plump, soft spread of tannin, ample fruit sweetness, almost a chocolate cake thing happening, settled acidity, and a faintly saline finish of good length. High quality, though perhaps lacking excitement? Or maybe that's just me.

    Real Review

Very ripe sweet berry fruit and spices (cloves and pepper) to sniff, the taste exotic and sweet-fruited, lush and supple textured, nicely balanced and quite concentrated. It needed time, air and patience.

This has really intense aromas of rich red and dark berries and plums with bergamot and orange rind. Some chocolate and an earthy, gently herbal edge. The palate has very fleshy, full-bodied and supple style with rich blackberries and suave tannins. This is a selection of the best material chosen for superior richness, concentration and depth. 2018 has really dished up a beauty.
